Streaming Services for Cold Nights

Les Parapluies de Cherbourg [“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”] (1963), directed by Jacques Demy

On those cold nights in the Christmas holidays, there’s always the classic two-hour search through the big streaming services for something you haven’t watched before. Seen all the Netflix originals? Watched all the Amazon Christmas movies?

Well, fear not, because, as a student, you have a subscription to three different university streaming services. Box of Broadcasts, Kanopy and Drama Online all allow university students and staff to access this treasure trove of TV shows and films, many of which cannot be accessed on any other major streaming services.

You can search by title, director, or genre, and take your pick.

For some easy watching, try one of these RomComs on Box of Broadcasts:

  • Bridget Jones’ Diary

  • The Devil Wears Prada

  • Clueless

  • She’s All That

  • 10 Things I Hate About You

  • Pretty Woman

  • Sixteen Candles

  • Pretty in Pink

  • Hairspray

Make sure to check out the Criterion Collection on Kanopy for some of the most beautifully made films you’ll ever watch. Try “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” for an exhibition in on screen colour.

There are also some timeless classics like:

  •  Pride and Prejudice

  • Darkest Hour

  • Patriot

  • The Silent Child

  • Billy Elliot

It’s Christmas show season, but if you’d prefer to watch the stage from the comfort of your sofa, try Drama Online’s collection of plays from the National Theatre: you can find the full list here, with many more non-National Theatre plays in the back catalogues.

Why don’t you log in to see what you can find? And write us a review of anything you find particularly thought provoking!
